Web Hosting Servers
Web hosting servers enable you to store webpages, so that others may view those webpages on the Internet. This is done with the use of disk space and bandwidth. Of course, large companies and corporations have the means to forgo a Web Hosting Company, and host their webpages on their own equipment. Most people, however, do require the services of a Web Hosting Company.
When you first start looking into what a Web Hosting Company has to offer, you will most likely be confronted with a wide range of hosting plans or packages. You may even find free Web Hosting. Those that do not offer free hosting – which isn’t necessarily free – have varying prices, anywhere from a few dollars per month upwards of $100 per month.
Some web hosting servers provide very little space and bandwidth, while others offer what seems to be an abundance of both. Some offer outstanding technical support and customer service, while others have no service or technical support to offer at all. You will find everything from nothing to everything in terms of Web Hosting services and packages if you look long enough.
Shared or Dedicated Web Hosting Servers
Many Web Hosting companies give you two basic options. These are to either have your pages hosted on a shared server, or to have your pages hosted on a dedicated server. If the server is dedicated, this means that there won’t be any other websites on the same server that you are on. If it is shared, it means that you will be sharing the server – including space and bandwidth – with other websites. Dedicated hosting typically costs a great deal more than shared hosting, but the benefits of dedicated hosting usually make it well worth the extra cost.
Of course, one of the drawbacks of a dedicated server is that you must have someone to administer the server. Some Web Hosting companies will include this in the cost, while others will charge an additional fee for administrative duties. You can also bring in your own administrator, or administer the server yourself, if you have the technical knowledge to do so.
Database
Even if you don’t have any need for a database now, you may have such a need in the near – or far – future. Therefore, it is important to select a hosting company that offers this feature. At the same time, you either need to know how to set up and maintain a database, or hire someone who knows how, when the time comes to get a database setup. Ideally, your site administrator will know how to setup and maintain a database.
As you can see, setting up and maintaining a website, on any type of web hosting servers, does require some administrative tasks. It is important to understand this going in, and to have a plan for getting these administrative tasks taken care of.
